Will Instagram be a key focus of your social media marketing in 2020? It has shown a lot of promise in 2019, so it very well may become many businesses’ platform of choice. As Instagram continues to grow, more and more brands are looking to the future to see how their marketing efforts can improve for next year. With that being said, let’s get into some Instagram trends and predictions for 2020!

First let’s lay down some cold hard facts. About one billion people use Instagram every month, and over half of them use it every single day. Similarly, 50% of users follow at least 1 business account. On average, users spend about a half hour on the platform scrolling through all the bite sized pieces of content it has to offer.
Instagram actually has a higher engagement rate than Twitter and Facebook combined. Here is where it gets interesting for businesses. 73% of teens say that Instagram is the best way for a brand to reach them, and more than half of Instagram as a whole say they become more interested in a brand after seeing it in Instagram Stories.
This may seem like a lot of data, but I hope that it excites you as we move into this new year.
Instagram has been testing out the removal of likes in multiple countries. It is unknown if it will be permanent but it is reported that some influencers claimed that their engagement dropped about 41% after likes were hidden. This makes it more important now than ever to share powerful content on Instagram that inspires engagement.
Another Instagram trend we are seeing is with Influencers. They are starting to move away from the absolutely perfect Instagram feeds where the angles are just right, and the sun is hitting them perfectly. People are craving authentic feeds. They are craving something with which to establish a connection.
This may seem like an easy one, but many brands struggle to stay on brand and to stay true to themselves. It is great to analyze other people’s way of doing things but in the end you have to decide what works best for you. Find out what you audience wants from your brand! Don’t be afraid to tell people everything they need to know, even if some things are uncomfortable, as it makes you appear honest and vulnerable. People will respect that and trust that your company is worth supporting.
Your brand voice should be different and separate you from other companies, that resonates with your viewers. Especially since Instagram may be removing likes, it should be your number one priority to entice customers to start a dialogue so you can develop a relationship. Customers are becoming more private, and trust is the number one thing that needs to be had between you and your audience.
Now more than ever, people want authenticity and social proof. Yes, it’s great if an influencer is endorsing your product, but nothing can compare to a bunch of positive reviews and proof that you are great at what you do.
Expect to see more live video in general. This could be video of people’s products in action, or just intended to start conversations with customers. Don’t shy away from live video in 2020! It may become a powerful resource to your business.
What we saw in 2019 was that if one company came out with a feature that people liked, then soon all of the social media apps would have that feature. It will be the same in 2020 except these features will become even more developed. Make sure you stay on top of current trends so you don’t miss out on what could be a useful resource. New stickers and creative tools will give many opportunities for companies to interact with customers.
AR and VR are going to be more popular as the technology continues to develop. We already see new branded face filters, GIFs, and stickers. AR and VR is a world that we have only scratched the service of, so be on the lookout for advancements in this technology. It will change the way we approach social media and technology as we know it.

As you may know by now, video has taken the world by storm. Whether it is a fifteen second story, or a 5 minute long IGTV video, there is no escaping this visual medium. IGTV has the potential to really become a popular part of the Instagram interface. Although it is still fairly new and not everyone is using it, there are people already using it to cross promote with different profiles and channels. Start thinking about how you can leverage video with the tools Instagram is offering.
Don’t make self promotion the only kind of video you post. There are a lot of things you can do to tell your brand’s story and develop relationships with your audience. Similarly, don’t be afraid to experiment. There are going to be new features and types of video ideas that you haven’t tried. Go ahead and see how they work for you and adjust your marketing plan accordingly.

Yes there are obviously video posts, picture posts, shoppable posts, etc. But, there are also posting trends. Although these post types are not going anywhere, how people use these post types can change frequently. A popular Instagram trend has been posting tweets as picture posts.
Some ways you can leverage this Instagram trend is posting your most popular tweet. Or, you can repost some tweets you see from your customers. That will get them excited and make them feel appreciated. It’s more important than ever for businesses to listen to what their crowd is saying. What better way than to post to a voice that is not your own company’s but rather a patron of your company? It may also motivate people to post more about your business in hopes to get featured on your main page!
Instagram Stories Ads
Instagram Stories make it very easy to access your product/service/etc. page, because all you need to do is swipe up. It is a quick and easy way to raise awareness for your brand. About 500 million people watch Stories every single day!
However, make sure that the first 15 seconds keeps the viewer’s attention long enough for them to watch the other clips. Always be strategic and think through how and why you are doing a specific ad type to maximize your results. A Story Ad has seven objectives: Brand awareness, reach, video views, conversions, app installs, lead generation and traffic. Although, more will be added in the future.
Pro Tip: Carousel ads are now available on Instagram stories. Instead of one 15 second ad, you can upload 3 fifteen second videos if you wanted. This gives you more time to tell a story.
Let’s be real: 2015 marketing tricks are not going to work in 2020. Times are changing and so are all the platforms with which we have become so accustomed. As marketers we need to understand the tools we have at our fingertips and how to use them effectively. A lot has changed and old Instagram trends have been replaced with new ones. The cycle will continue and we are the ones to navigate our way through these changes to better our businesses in the long run.
