Holiday Marketing Strategies You NEED to Know!
Merry marketing everybody! Christmas is now less than 70 days away. Nearly half of US shoppers start shopping for the holidays in November or earlier. The peak shopping period is even closer – so if you want to make that end of the year push, now is definitely the time to start amping up your holiday marketing game.
You should be going all out with your marketing efforts. Social Media is the new window shopping!
Pro-Tip: When developing these marketing strategies for this year’s holiday season, make sure to show your unique brand voice and personality through your content.
Find Your Platform
There is a lot of real estate for your advertisements to live. This is why it is crucial to decide which platforms are going to work best for you! One ad may perform well on one platform, and prove ineffective on others.
Once you’ve decided which platform works best for your audience (Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, etc.), get creative. Find an aesthetic that complements your brand’s identity – with so many filters, gifs, emojis, and even songs to play around with, you’re bound to make something your audience will enjoy!
Here are some ideas to get you in the spirit of holiday marketing:
- Share a teaser for an upcoming product
- Remind followers about deals, steals, and order deadlines
- Share behind-the-scenes of your store—how you’re updating it or what a new product brainstorming process is like
- Give a tour of your workstation, whether it’s your dining room table or a local coffee shop
- Collaborate with an influencer or a partner—put together a story takeover, co-host a giveaway, etc.
- Spread holiday cheer and show people how you’re preparing for the festivities
Tell Your Story
To help you with your efforts, Facebook has released two new tools to make that push just a little bit easier. One of those being Stories Templates:
As you can see here, the new templates provide simple, visually appealing Stories presentation options which brands can use to advertise whatever they want! If you’ve been looking into diving into stories, this could be a great place to start. It’s quick, easy, and attention-grabbing.
Do You Even Message, Bro
Being able to message a business can be the difference between a sale and a lost opportunity. Over 60% of holiday shoppers report being more inclined to shop with a business they can message.
This is directly from the source (Facebook): “More and more customers have begun reaching out via messages. In fact, 20B messages are now being sent every month between people and businesses on Messenger. That’s a tenfold increase in just three years.
The three main reasons people message businesses:
Develop a Defined Video Strategy
With so many companies vying for a customer’s attention, you must be engaging enough to capture their attention. In such a visual environment, you need to show your story rather than type it. Even if we put your perfectly crafted text ad next to a video someone made with their iPhone, I can almost guarantee the video ad will see more results.
If you’re a business, your customers know you are trying to sell them something. If you want their time and money then give them something they want!
Typically, online users want to be either entertained or educated. Check out these two effective examples from both of these perspectives:

Every day, there are 1,044 children born in rural Egypt who will never learn to read or write. That’s why this Black Friday weekend, you can support the right to literacy by making a choice. Every dollar spent in-store and online, up to $80,000, will go directly towards building two schools in Kafr El-Sheik, where our cotton is grown. – 🏫: Swipe through to learn more. kotn.com/blackfriday
Kotn’s message is clearly supposed to be informative but it was also supposed to make you think and engage. It wants you to slide and stay with them for just a minute for a topic that is serious to them. They are using their platform to display a creative ad for a direct and well thought out message. Everyone’s holiday marketing tactics will look a bit different but the strategies will be similar.
The most important thing is to define the goal of your video campaign. Is it to increase sales? Is it to increase brand awareness? That is for you to decide! But, whatever you do decide, remember – it doesn’t need to be complicated to be effective. Some of the most successful commercials are simple but they have a clear message.
Pro-Tip: Don’t let your creative video fall on deaf ears! Put subtitles on your video. Make sure your video is watchable by everyone no matter where they are watching.
Use Social Media Retargeting
Don’t just hope that your ads reach the right people. Retargeting is a form of online advertising that can personally market to people based on their on-site behavior. This will build brand awareness, gain new customers, and steal the attention away from your competitors’ customers.
If a customer has viewed products on your site but never fully decided to commit to that purchase, you can re-target that person with a discount code for some of those products! This may encourage that person to finally make that purchase they’ve been holding out for.
Social Media Retargeting can be a very lucrative action for you to take this holiday season. Be sure to apply all the information you read in this blog to increase the effectiveness of your marketing, and thus increasing your conversions!
Use Instagram to Its Full Potential
Instagram can be a great place to get creative. Let’s take a look at some ways to get your feed into the holiday spirit below.
Showcase your products and services alongside decorations for the holiday
Put your coffee next to some pine needles. Put a santa hat on your logo. Set some holiday themed candles on your cake. Do something. These little things will help garner attention for your product and help your business seem more “real” and authentic to your customers. Will your product make a great gift or decoration for the holidays? Showcase it. Okay, you get the point, let’s move on.
Offer discounts or Organize a Giveaway
A discount will always be welcomed by an audience with open arms. However, a holiday discount adds a sense of urgency, implying that this is not going to last much longer. Or, organize a giveaway where customers need to share your post to enter. Do something that gets your audience’s attention, and create an easier way for them to interact with you during this holiday season.
Here is a giveaway that Dominos did a couple years ago! From this one giveaway that are trading money for followers and engagement. This trade off will pay off heavily if these people become long-time customers. However, not all of us have 10,000 dollars to giveaway. So, start to think of creative giveaway or discount opportunities relevant to your business that will be beneficial to everyone involved.
Create gift guides for different budgets or needs
Don’t make your customer work to find or buy your products. You should be making it as easy as possible for them to get their hands on whatever you have to offer. Create Instagram stories telling your special packages, or create a specific holiday package that will make a perfect gift for someone.
Drive buzz with stories
Stories are a great way to build buzz around a certain topic. They are quick, to the point, and will surely be viewed by your followers. Try using some of the tools that many of these platforms have to enhance your stories like music, emojis, etc. Just make sure it fits your brand voice.
Encourage your community to save your products on Insta
Many people may not even think about this, but you can save products on many platforms! This is great for when people may not have time to complete a purchase or look more into your product. Tell your community to save your products to view later – maybe through a story post or a graphic.
Have Fun With It!
Make this time of year a fun time of year for your marketing team. Talk with them to see what holiday marketing ideas your business can apply to this year’s final months. Don’t be afraid to get creative and think outside of the box. Instagram, Facebook, and many other platforms offer easy ways for you to be successful with your ad campaigns. Now go get’ em!
