Facebook and Instagram are two powerful social media platforms that you can spend all your time in and see results. However, there are some other platforms that still boast a huge user base and have proven effective to many businesses.
Let’s take a look at some social platforms you may not have heard of, or have not thought about implementing to your marketing plan.
This is a social platform that you are probably familiar with, because it is almost as popular as Facebook and Instagram. Twitter had a brilliant marketing strategy from the start with limiting the character count of posts. This gave everyone a voice and limited the “noise” of social media. This goes for everyone: businesses, journalists, celebrities, etc. You may have even seen the President take to Twitter to announce news.
When it comes to using Twitter for business, you can definitely find ways to drive customers and sales to your business. Part of doing this is consistently engaging with your audience, and adding value with all your posts.
Depending on your commitment to social media marketing, Twitter can be a powerful tool to building relationships and brand awareness by connecting directly to other Twitter users. Keep in mind that Twitter needs its own unique marketing strategy, that plans for multiple tweets per day.
However, these posts don’t need to be the most groundbreaking content you’ll ever post. Keep it short, and don’t overthink it.
LinkedIn has become a social media platform tailored to network with other professionals and has revolutionized the way people seek, find, and get hired for jobs. Not only is it a great networking platform, but it’s also a great way to share content! One thing to remember is that you are more likely to find business partners than new customers (unless your market includes B2b).
While this isn’t necessarily a rule, people don’t typically go to LinkedIn for entertainment or online shopping. Mostly, people are there to learn more about their industry, see what their professional contacts are up to, and look for more career opportunities.
You will probably use LinkedIn less often than the others but you should still have a presence on this platform. Although you can use it to show off your business page, it’s more tailored to expanding your professional network.
YouTube is a platform that every business should be on to some extent. It is one of the largest search engines in the world. More than its competitors like Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, YouTube is the main platform for sharing information via video. It has about 2 billion monthly users who not only search for entertainment but to learn more information.
With Instagram and Facebook, users love to quickly open the app to consume bite-sized pieces of content. However, YouTube is unique in the fact that their users spend at least 25 minutes on the site each time. The algorithm actually prioritizes longer videos, and longer watch time. This allows you to create long form content that wouldn’t normally be native to platforms like Instagram or Twitter.
Additionally, you can create video tutorials to back up your content like blogs, visually show how a product works, or give users a behind the scenes look at your business. When uploading to YouTube, make sure you optimize your videos for YouTube SEO so they can be found more easily.
YouTube is a great social media platform for business. It will take some time to learn how to shoot and edit professional looking videos to meet users’ expectations, but you don’t need a lot to make it happen. Reddit is a unique type of social media. It is more about genuine sharing and learning and less about connection and engagement. The reason for this is because Reddit groups have strict rules as to what may or may not be posted for commercial purposes. If you don’t follow these guidelines you could be removed from these groups.
So why is it on this list? Well, a lot of companies have found a ton of success by engaging on Reddit. It takes a little creativity, lots of interaction, and a sincere desire to teach and/or learn.
Reddit can be a great platform for your business if you primarily use it for personal purposes. Users can go through your posting history, and actually investigate if you are genuinely contributing to a community.
Here is a great reason that Reddit is highly effective: market research. In other words, use Reddit to ask questions and get feedback regarding different parts of your business (ad campaigns, web design, new products, etc.) Many companies invest tons of money to get this kind of information from their audience, but they don’t realize that Reddit allows them to do it for free!
Depending on your company, Pinterest can be one of the top social media platforms for your business. It has about 291 million active users. Most of the users are millennials, over half are women between 25 and 54, and nearly 40% of new users are men.
Here is the big selling point: People are spending money on Pinterest.
For every $1 spent on ads, Pinterest gives a $4.3 return. This makes it less expensive and more profitable of an advertising platform than Facebook or Twitter. In fact, Pinterest users have a household income of over 100k, which is why it is such a great platform to drive conversions!
The social media strategy to approaching Pinterest is the same as anything else: a consistent schedule, creative pictures, and a strategy to grow followers. Once you start gaining momentum, more traffic and conversions will be headed your way in no time.
Pinterest can be a fantastic way to drive traffic to your business, but it is not for every business. Companies like home decor, restaurants, travel, and others like this can really succeed on Pinterest. The reason is due to the fact that these types of content typically have visually appealing content that is easily shared.
With enough creativity, nearly any business can use Pinterest to boost traffic.
Quora isn’t a platform that you would initially think of when talking about social media platforms. However, it can be an incredible way to drive traffic to your business. It is a question and answer based site where people write questions about a given topic, and others have the opportunity to answer those questions.
You can look for questions in your professional field, answer these questions to establish authority, and link to content that you’ve done in the past related to the topic at hand. Similar to reddit, the moderators are very good at discerning between a genuine answer and blatant self-promotion. The most successful (and helpful) answers are ones that are directly related to the question and are not billboards for your business.
Quora is a social media platform that every business should try out. You can genuinely help people, establish a reputation, and drive sales to your business. Once you make an account, start searching for questions in your field. One last benefit of Quora that I will share, is that the answers you provide are actually indexed by Google which can benefit your business in the long run.
Although there are so many great social media platforms to use as a business, Facebook and Instagram are two that you should be actively using. Think of how you can repurpose content from these sites to provide value to the following you have on other sites.
